About the Prototype:
One of the most striking diesel locomotives on European tracks is undoubtedly
the "NoHAB“. A series of roughly 160 diesel locos was built in the late 50s to early 60s by the Swedish firm Nydqvist och Holm AB. The common nickname "NoHAB" comes from their initials. These were built for railroads in several European countries, under license from the leading US locomotive maker of the era, the Electro Motive Division of General Motors. They feature an adaptation of the classic F-Unit "bulldog" nose, but with a cab on each end. Similar to American "E-Units", the trucks are A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, with the extra axles helping to spread out the weight for European track with lighter axle ratings.
The vehicles differed in various details, such as the installed engine power, but shared the same design principles and the beautifully shaped locomotive body. The locos performed extremely well and were used in various services. Their service in Denmark and Belgium lasted until the late 1980s and for about ten years longer in Norway and Hungary. Through the liberalization of the European rail market, many locomotives found new jobs with private companies in Germany as well, and some of them are still in commercial service today.
Model:
The PIKO model of the NoHAB benefits from the undisputed elegance of its prototype. Great attention was paid to each detail: The eye-catching side ventilation grills are used as strong dividing elements of the locomotive body with finely etched parts. But the distinctive front cab windows as well as the side "portholes" also contribute to the overall impression of elegance, due to their perfectly flush fit. Thanks to two powerful engines and finely tuned gear ratios, the model has excellent driving and pulling characteristics. Various lighting functions spread a pleasant atmosphere even in the dark. This model is rounded off by the gritty, clear sound of the sound model, which is in no way inferior to the prototype.
